In a tragic event, five migrants, including a child, lost their lives off the coast of Wimereux while trying to cross the English Channel. This is not the first time such an incident has happened this year in Wimereux. A significant rescue operation was carried out and 48 individuals were saved. British Home Secretary James Cleverly will visit Italy this week to enhance collaborative efforts in curbing illegal immigration from North Africa. During his visit, he will meet with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to discuss ways to prevent dangerous migration journeys across the Mediterranean. The UK and Italy are exploring broader areas of cooperation to address the root causes of illegal migration, including initiatives such as the Rome Process and Italy’s G7 Presidency. Cleverly’s visit to Lampedusa will provide him with firsthand insight into how Italian authorities work together with agencies like Frontex and international humanitarian groups to intercept migrant boats and save lives at sea. In a recent speech in New York, Cleverly emphasized the need for global action on migration, and a deal was reached with Frontex to enhance cooperation, information sharing, joint training, and explore new technologies in border control.
