Palestinian business owners in North Olmsted

North Olmsted has become home to a thriving Arab community, with over a dozen Arab-owned businesses lining the same stretch of road. Among these businesses are many owned by Palestinians, who are currently facing the impacts of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

One such establishment is Fire and Dough, owned and operated by Nizam Suliman. As both the owner and chef, Suliman takes pride in serving fresh, halal meat to his customers. His journey with cooking began at the young age of 13 while living in the Middle East. In 2013, he arrived in Cleveland and was able to fulfill his dream of opening his own business on Oct. 10, 2023.

However, shortly after the grand opening of Fire and Dough, the Israel-Hamas conflict began. Suliman expressed how the war overseas has weighed heavily on the Palestinian community in North Olmsted. The loss of loved ones has led to a somber atmosphere, affecting business and the ability to celebrate the new restaurant.

Despite these challenges, Suliman remains appreciative of the support shown by the North Olmsted community. He remains hopeful that peace will prevail in his home country and around the world. With a strong belief in a better future, he reassures his workers that everything will eventually improve.
