Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by both the US and the EU, has revealed that it is currently engaged in talks with Israel regarding the latest proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. This news comes as Egypt increases its efforts to put an end to the ongoing conflict and prevent a potential Israeli attack on Rafah, as reported by AP.
Khalil al-Haya, a senior Hamas official, did not provide any details about the Israeli offer but stated that it was a response to a proposal made by Hamas two weeks ago. Previous discussions between Egypt and Israel focused on the possibility of a six-week ceasefire and the exchange of hostages, including the release of 40 civilians and sick individuals in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
According to al-Haya, leaders of the three main militant groups operating in Gaza are also involved in negotiations to end the conflict. Despite calls for restraint from various countries, including the US, Israel remains determined to carry out its plans for a ground assault on Rafah due to the presence of Hamas militants in the area.
Egypt has warned that any attack on Rafah could have severe humanitarian consequences for Gaza. The situation remains fluid as negotiations continue between the parties involved.
