James Whomsley, a renowned British YouTube host with an engineering channel, recently made headlines by building the largest remote-controlled aircraft carrier model in the world. The feat was confirmed by Guinness World Records. To add to his impressive accomplishments, he successfully landed two remote-control model planes on the carrier, earning him another world record.
Whomsley spent three months constructing the monumental aircraft carrier model using a combination of wood, foam, and fiberglass. He utilized expanding foam to make the carrier waterproof for added durability and functionality. After completing the project, he had to learn how to operate the remote-controlled planes and make modifications to both the planes and the carrier in order to execute successful landings.
The experience of bringing his idea to life and seeing it work was described by Whomsley as “amazing.” To facilitate landings, he added first-person view cameras to the model aircraft for better visibility. The model planes used in the project were modified ready-to-fly models. Testing flights and landings were carried out at Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire. Unfortunately, one of the planes crashed into the water during testing.
A YouTube video documenting Whomsley’s project showcases his numerous attempts to land the planes on the carrier as well as highlights from the building process. This is not Whomsley’s first time making history with his engineering projects; previously, he set a Guinness World Record for
