Regulating Hormones with Yoga: Exploring the Benefits

Yoga has been shown to support hormonal balance, regulate hormones in the body, reduce stress and promote relaxation. Hormonal disorders occur when the endocrine feedback system malfunctions, leading to imbalances in hormone regulation. This imbalance can result in various health issues such as heart rhythm disorders, bone and tissue development problems, and fertility issues.

According to Dr. Truong Thi Vanh Khuyen from the Department of Endocrinology – Diabetes at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, regular practice of yoga can help reduce stress, depression and anxiety. This form of exercise stimulates the body to release hormones that can improve these conditions, increase energy levels and promote feelings of happiness. Yoga also triggers the release of endorphins which act as natural pain relievers in the body and help manage emotions and cope with difficult situations.

During yoga practice, several hormones are released such as endorphins which interact with receptors in the brain to create a feeling of excitement and reduce stress while also helping the body manage emotions effectively. Another hormone affected by yoga is cortisol often referred to as the stress hormone. Cortisol is necessary for the body but excessive levels can lead to mood changes, weight gain, and insomnia. Yoga helps lower cortisol levels, reduce stress and calm the mind. Additionally serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood and feelings of depression is released during yoga practice which helps increase energy levels and improve cognitive function.

While yoga has positive effects on hormone balance and stress levels it is important to note that it should be used as a complementary approach rather than a replacement for medical treatment in cases of endocrine disorders. Individuals with hormonal imbalances should seek guidance from an Endocrinologist for proper diagnosis and treatment
