The highly prized Golden Ball trophy that legendary Argentinian soccer player Diego Maradona won at the 1986 FIFA World Cup is set to be sold in June by Aguttes auction house in France. This historic soccer icon’s Golden Ball will go under the hammer on June 6th, with an estimated sale price of “millions” of dollars.
As per reports by French newspaper L’Equipe, Maradona’s Golden Ball was previously stolen but was later recovered and is now among numerous trophy lots in an auction room. Despite its theft, Aguttes has verified the authenticity of the award after its recovery.
Maradona, who tragically passed away at the age of 60 in 2020, is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, alongside Pelé, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo. His most remarkable achievement came in 1986 when he led Argentina to their second World Cup victory, scoring five goals in the tournament and winning the Golden Ball for the most outstanding player.
With this upcoming sale, Maradona’s award will become the first FIFA World Cup Golden Ball ever to be sold at auction.
