A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that U.S. voters believe Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump would be better for the economy than President Joe Biden. The poll, which closed on Sunday, revealed that 41% of respondents feel Trump has a better approach to the economy, while 34% picked Biden. The remaining respondents either were not sure or felt that neither candidate was better.
Inflation and rising consumer prices have been a concern for voters in recent years, but the jobless rate has been below 4% for over two years. According to the latest poll, Biden’s approval rating dipped slightly from the previous month, falling to 38% from 40%. Factors like Biden’s age – he is 81 – also concern voters. Trump, who is 77 and faces multiple criminal trials including one that started recently on charges of falsifying business records, has repeatedly claimed that the 2020 election was fraudulent.
Trump’s advantage on economic issues in the poll was at seven percentage points, higher than in previous months. On the other hand, Biden had a nine-point advantage over Trump when it came to dealing with political extremism and protecting democracy. The state of the U.S economy is a major concern for voters and could impact Biden’s chances of re-election. Both candidates have been neck and neck in public opinion polls with Trump previously leading Biden by four points in another Reuters/Ipsos survey this year
