Curiosity Rover Back on the Move: Scientific Discoveries and New Location Expected on Sol 1398

After a brief pause from scientific operations to address a safe mode anomaly, the Curiosity rover is back on the move on Sol 1398. The day ahead will be filled with various scientific observations and a drive to a new location.

The plan for the day will begin with ChemCam and Mastcam observations of the target “Luanda” to study the composition of the local bedrock. Mastcam will also capture images of blocky deposits and stratification within the Murray formation. These observations will provide valuable insights into the geology and composition of Mars, helping us better understand its past and potential for life.

Following these scientific observations, Curiosity will drive approximately 76 meters and take post-drive images for future targeting. This will allow the team to accurately determine where they want to go next, ensuring that they can make the most efficient use of their time on Mars.

In the afternoon, there will be another round of observations using Navcam and Mastcam to study the atmosphere. These observations will help us better understand how Mars’ atmosphere interacts with solar radiation, as well as any seasonal changes that may be occurring. This information can help us better predict how Mars’ environment will evolve over time.

Overnight, Curiosity will conduct its final CheMin analysis of the Oudam drill sample, providing scientists with even more information about Mars’ geology and composition. With this analysis complete, we can continue to piece together a fuller understanding of this fascinating planet’s past and potential for life in the future.

Despite these tasks, the team is excited to be back on track and exploring new terrain on Mars once again. To learn more about this exciting development, check out our recent press release by Lauren Edgar.
