The Commanders are entering a new era with a new franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels, and an athletic prospect on the offensive line. While some may see the pick of Daniels as risky, he is expected to be a significant improvement over last season’s quarterback, Sam Howell. The success of this draft class largely depends on Daniels becoming a top-tier starter.
The selection of Jer’Zhan Newton, the defensive tackle from Illinois chosen 36th overall, was widely praised by fans. Despite concerns about his foot injury, if Newton can stay healthy, he is predicted to make a strong impact for the team. Newton is considered one of the most polished interior pass rushers in this year’s draft class and will benefit from playing alongside established players like Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne.
On the other hand, some were not as thrilled with the selection of Jayden Daniels as the second overall pick ahead of Drake Maye. While Daniels shows potential with his rushing ability and deep ball accuracy, concerns arise from his frame and lack of elite passing traits. Maye’s upside may have been seen as higher by some, but Daniels still has a path to success.
The draft class also comprised a variety of other picks including Mike Sainristil, Ben Sinnott, Brandon Coleman, Luke McCaffrey, Jordan Magee, Dominique Hampton and Javontae Jean-Baptiste. These additions provide depth and talent to the team’s roster which should give fans hope following a less-than-stellar free agency period.
