Soccer fans worldwide will now have an annual day to celebrate the beloved sport – May 25th. This significant date commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first international soccer tournament in history, held on May 25, 1924, during the Olympic Games in Paris. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in recognition of this milestone, with over 160 countries co-sponsoring the initiative.
The resolution acknowledges the essential role played by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, along with regional and national soccer federations, in advancing the sport. On World Football Day, observed annually on May 25th, nations, U.N. bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector are encouraged to promote the benefits of soccer through educational and awareness-raising activities that align with national priorities.
Libya’s U.N. Ambassador Taher El-Sonni emphasized the universal appeal of soccer, calling it “the number one game played and followed around the world.” Beyond being a popular pastime, soccer is viewed as a universal language that transcends national and cultural barriers. It serves as a platform for promoting gender equality and social inclusion while fostering mutual understanding and respect among people from diverse backgrounds.
