In the small town of Pragsdorf, located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a family gathered to celebrate what would have been their son Joel’s seventh birthday. Just two days prior, the regional court in Neubrandenburg had sentenced Geri K. to seven years and nine months in prison for the murder of Joel, who was only six years old. Despite the immense loss and sadness, Kathleen and Till K. wanted to set aside their pain and sorrow to honor their son’s memory on his special day.

Joel’s four siblings, Uncle Felix, Aunt Tini, Grandma, and Grandpa were present at the meadow near the football field where the tragic incident had occurred. The family decorated the space with photos, candles, stuffed animals, and garlands to create a festive atmosphere in remembrance of Joel. His parents expressed that being in this location brought them closer to their beloved son, as it was where he spent his final moments.

The celebration included strawberry shortcake and a Minion-themed cake, Joel’s favorite. Although Joel could no longer be physically present to celebrate with them, his family believed that he was watching over them from above. The birthday celebration served as a way to honor and cherish Joel’s memory, keeping his spirit alive in their hearts.
