In February, a 12-year-old camper died at Trails Carolina, a therapy camp for troubled teens located in the mountains. The incident occurred in the early morning hours and led to the suspension of the camp’s license. Following an investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), a deficiencies report was issued, citing issues with restraints used for potentially dangerous kids, medication administration, and communication with parents or guardians.
Trails Carolina officials have acknowledged these deficiencies and have submitted a correction plan to address them. The plan includes changes such as ceasing the use of bivvies and tarps as restraints, improving incident reporting procedures, and increasing communication with parents or guardians. However, despite their commitment to making these adjustments, Trails Carolina officials maintain that they do not agree with the state’s report on the cause of death. They argue that it has not been officially determined by the medical examiner and any speculation regarding the incident is premature.
In addition to the deficiencies report and potential license revocation, Trails Carolina was fined $18,000 in March. The camp continues to work with DHHS officials to address any concerns and improve their programming for troubled teens.
