Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo hosted the Michigan Science Olympiad over the weekend, drawing teams from all around the state. Despite fierce competition, two standout teams emerged: Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School.
The Brighton High School Science Olympiad team excelled in one event, taking first place in the Scrambler category. The team’s coach, Shannan Pereira, expressed her pride in her students’ hard work and determination. With nine years of experience coaching at the high school level and four years at Scranton Middle School, Pereira has seen firsthand the dedication and effort that it takes to succeed in these competitions.
Scranton Middle School also did exceptionally well, earning two medals. In the Pentathlon event, they finished sixth, completing a relay race that involved physical tasks and science questions. They also placed seventh in Dynamic Planets, a written test that covered topics such as earthquakes and volcanoes. Pereira highlighted the importance of hard work and dedication for success in Science Olympiad competitions.
