On May 10, a resolution may be submitted to the UN General Assembly recognizing Palestine as an equal member of the Security Council. This follows a similar resolution that was recently blocked by the United States in the UN Security Council. The decisions made by the General Assembly are advisory and do not automatically result in the creation of a Palestinian state. However, it is expected that an overwhelming majority of UN members will vote in support of the resolution.
Israel’s representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, has suggested that if the resolution is adopted, Israel should consider stopping funding to the international organization. This move would be similar to what was done with UNESCO when it granted the Palestinian Authority full membership status. It is important to remember that in 1988, the Palestinian National Council declared independence of Palestine which was supported by 140 UN members and many states recognized it immediately however it did not lead to the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
