At the 2024 Australian Open Championships, Elizabeth Dekkers set a new All Comers Record in the 200m fly event with a time of 2:05.20. This was not only a new personal best for the 19-year-old swimmer but also surpassed her previous record of 2:05.26 set in 2023.
Despite her impressive performance, Dekkers finished as the runner-up to Olympic medalist Brianna Throssell, who recorded a time of 2:06.98, followed by Abbey Connor who took the bronze in 2:08.09. However, Dekkers’ difference from her fastest two times is just .06 and most of the gap came from a faster start this year.
Dekkers remains ranked third among Australian all-time performers in the 200m fly event and is currently ranked 14th in the world. The upcoming Trials in June will determine her future ranking as she currently holds the second spot in the world this season.
In addition to her success at the Australian Open Championships, Dekkers has also achieved podium finishes at three international events last year. She won silver with a time of 2:05.46 at Fukuoka, bronze with a time of 2:03.94 at Short Course World Championships and gold with a time of 2:07.26 at Commonwealth Games. These accomplishments demonstrate her consistency and strong performance on an international stage and solidify her position as one of Australia’s top swimmers today
