Brazil’s Bid for 2027 Women’s World Cup Takes the Top Spot in FIFA Evaluation

FIFA has released an evaluation report that ranks Brazil’s bid for the 2027 Women’s World Cup higher than those submitted by Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium. This marks the first time that members of the soccer governing body will have an open vote to determine the tournament’s hosts. The FIFA Congress is scheduled to vote on the two bids on May 17 at its meeting in Bangkok.

Brazil’s bid received an average score of 4.0 out of 5, while the joint European bid received a score of 3.7. Both bids were deemed to qualify for consideration as they exceeded the minimum hosting requirements in the technical evaluation. Last week, the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid, with U.S. Soccer announcing their focus on hosting the 2031 tournament. South Africa also dropped its bid last year, stating they would aim for the 2031 tournament.

While Brazil has previously hosted men’s World Cup tournaments in 1950 and 2014, it has never hosted a Women’s World Cup before now. Germany hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2011, and Australia and New Zealand co-hosted it in 2023 as part of a dual-hosting arrangement – marking only once before that this was done by two countries or nations worldwide during such events or even any sports event at all (excluding Olympics). It remains to be seen which country will be selected to host this highly anticipated tournament as it continues through its selection process.
