What causes bias and prejudice in artificial intelligence?

The digital age is witnessing a rapid rise in the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in our world. Innovative tools, such as AI-powered image generators, hold immense promise for various applications. However, a recent analysis of Meta’s AI imaging model has uncovered persistent biases and prejudices in the results it produced. The model exhibited a strong bias towards discrimination based on race and age, resulting in images that did not meet the specifications provided by the user.

According to The Verge, Meta’s AI image generator was unable to accurately depict scenarios such as “an Asian man and a Caucasian friend” or “an Asian man with his white wife.” Instead, it generated images mainly featuring individuals with Asian features, regardless of the detailed instructions given. This bias in the model’s results raised concerns about the limitations of AI technology.

Moreover, the model also displayed age discrimination when generating images of heterosexual couples. Women were consistently portrayed as younger than men, highlighting another problematic aspect of this AI imaging model. These findings underscored the importance of addressing biases in artificial intelligence systems to ensure fair and accurate results.

César Beltrán, an AI specialist, identified the root cause of biases in AI models: the quality of data they are trained on. Models like Meta’s image generator learn from their training data and if this data is biased then it can lead to skewed results. Beltrán emphasized that filters and refinement processes need to be implemented during training to mitigate biases and improve overall performance of these models.

To address biases in AI models, Beltrán suggested implementing unlearning mechanisms that allow models to correct and forget biased information without requiring extensive retraining. This approach enables AI systems to continuously improve and adjust their outputs while fostering fairness and accuracy in their outputs.

While AI technology has enormous potential for many industries including healthcare, finance etc., we must be vigilant about its limitations and potential pitfalls when designing these tools so that they do not perpetuate existing social prejudices or discrimination.
