Amtrak Seeks Zero-Emissions Technology: RFI Issued for Railroad Professionals

Amtrak recently announced a request for information (RFI) to explore options to upgrade their passenger fleet with zero-emissions technology. The goal of this initiative is to eliminate emissions from the trains, in line with the company’s objective to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. This move is seen as transformative in providing a new era of rail travel that is safe, reliable, and has a smaller impact on the environment.

Currently, a significant portion of Amtrak’s passenger fleet is already powered by zero-emission equipment, including 108 electric Northeast Regional and Acela locomotives. These electric-powered locomotives produce no emissions when running on carbon-free electricity. The results of the RFI will play a crucial role in shaping future procurement decisions to ensure the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly fleet is deployed across Amtrak’s network.

Amtrak President Roger Harris expressed enthusiasm for this step forward, emphasizing the importance of finding clean technologies to transport customers across the extensive network. This initiative underscores Amtrak’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship in the transportation sector.
