Northern Ireland Science Institute Chooses Spanish Shipyard to Construct Next Research Vessel

The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Belfast, Northern Ireland has awarded a contract to Spanish shipbuilder Armon for the construction of a new research vessel. This vessel will be used for fishery and oceanographic research. The design of the vessel will be created by Skipsteknisk in order to meet strict underwater noise requirements outlined in the ICES 209 report. The vessel will measure 53 meters long and will be set up for a crew of 12 individuals along with 12 scientists.

One of the key features of the new vessel is the inclusion of a hybrid propulsion system with a large battery pack. This unique system will allow for emission-free operations for extended periods of time, enabling the vessel to remain at sea for up to 21 days at a time. Additionally, the propulsion system can be configured to run on biofuel. Completion and delivery of the new research vessel are expected to take place in 2027.

Upon completion, the vessel will replace the 35-year-old Corystes and will operate in Northern Ireland’s coastal waters, the Irish Sea, and adjacent regions. The new vessel is equipped to conduct a range of research activities in these areas. This new vessel marks a significant advancement for AFBI in advancing their research capabilities for fishery and oceanographic studies.
