The little girl was diagnosed with a meningioma after her persistent headache

A young girl in Hanoi suffered from severe headaches that lasted for weeks. Doctors at Hospital E discovered a large meningioma tumor in her brain, which required immediate surgery. The tumor was located on the midline and had grown to both sides of the cerebral hemispheres, blocking the venous sinuses and putting pressure on healthy brain tissue.

Dr. Bui Minh Thang from the Department of Neurosurgery explained that this case was challenging due to the patient’s age, the size of the tumor, and its precarious location. The surgical team used advanced techniques such as microsurgical glasses and nerve localization to carefully remove the tumor while minimizing damage to healthy brain tissue. The surgery took 8 hours, but they were successful in removing the entire tumor and surrounding tissue without causing any permanent damage.

The girl made a quick recovery following surgery, showing signs of alertness, a good appetite, and normal mobility. Ten days later, imaging tests confirmed that there were no residual tumors or lesions remaining. Meningiomas account for 20% of all intracranial tumors and are usually benign if treated promptly with surgery.

Doctors emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for children experiencing prolonged headaches or any other symptoms related to brain health. Timely detection and treatment can lead to successful outcomes like this one, where early intervention and advanced surgical techniques played a crucial role in treating this young girl’s meningioma tumor.

The successful surgery and recovery of this 9-year-old girl highlight how critical it is to seek medical attention for children who experience prolonged headaches or any other symptoms related to brain health. With timely detection and treatment, even large meningioma tumors can be successfully removed with minimal damage to healthy brain tissue using advanced surgical techniques such as microsurgical glasses and nerve localization.
