Wien Energie reduces electricity and gas prices

Vienna Energy Customers are now paying lower prices for electricity and gas at the municipal energy supplier. This is a result of Wien Energie’s decision to invest an additional 50 million euros this year in offers for customers in response to positive market developments. Last year, 340 million euros were already spent on price reductions. Small and medium-sized businesses will also see their electricity and gas tariffs automatically reduced in July, with reductions of up to 56 percent depending on the contract.

Household electricity prices may fall by up to 55 percent, while gas prices are now between 7 and 20 percent cheaper than last year. The Optima Relaxed tariff has been introduced, which features a price reduction of 14.9 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for electricity starting in July, while gas is priced at around 5.9 cents/kWh. The price reduction applies to most households whose price guarantee expires in the summer, but not all. Some households will continue to benefit from the price guarantee until April 2025.

Customers who commit to a further year with Energy Alliance providers EVN and Burgenland Energie will receive an additional discount, bringing the consumption price down to around 12.9 cents/kWh. To take advantage of the offer, customers must actively sign up by September 16th through the Wien Energie customer service. In contrast to previous years, current price reductions are a result of falling indices underlying the contracts, indicating a shift in approach from last year.

Wien Energie continues to offer discounts on district heating but it is unclear if there will be additional price adjustments this year.

The past discounts offered by Wien Energie were mainly due to contractual constraints preventing unilateral changes.

Last year’s price reductions were implemented in autumn 2023.

In conclusion, Vienna Energy Customers can now enjoy lower prices for electricity and gas at the municipal energy supplier due to Wien Energie’s investment and commitment towards its customers in response to positive market developments this year.
