Venezuela’s Opposition Selects Edmundo González Urrutia as Presidential Candidate

In the upcoming July 28 elections, Venezuela’s opposition has officially selected Edmundo González Urrutia as their candidate to challenge President Nicolás Maduro. The nomination process was extended due to reported technical difficulties in the system that prevented other candidates from being nominated.

Omar Barbosa, secretary general of the alliance, expressed his excitement about this decision, calling it a historic moment for the people of Venezuela. They believe they have chosen their next president. Despite not being present for the announcement, Gonzalez Urrutia, who is 74 years old, received unanimous support from various opposition parties.

Manuel Rosales had initially registered his candidacy with Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), but decided to withdraw at the last minute. While some close allies were disappointed by his decision, it ultimately paved the way for Gonzalez Urrutia to become the unanimous candidate representing the opposition in the upcoming elections.

Other opposition leaders celebrated this decision and are confident in their ability to challenge President Maduro with a united front. With only a few months left until election day, both sides are gearing up for an intense battle for control of Venezuela’s future.
