Mayor of Uvalde Steps Down Due to Health Concerns

Uvalde Police Chief Daniel Rodriguez announced his resignation on Monday, coinciding with the unexpected resignation of Mayor Cody Smith. Smith cited health concerns and the need to focus on his recovery from recent unexpected health issues in his statement released on Monday. The city council was scheduled to meet in a private session on Tuesday to discuss a controversial report commissioned by the city that defended the actions of local law enforcement during the response to the deadly 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting. However, the meeting was postponed due to concerns for the mayor’s health.

The independent investigation into the school shooting, conducted by private investigator Jesse Prado, sparked anger among victims’ families and community members when it found no wrongdoing by local officers who took over an hour to confront the gunman. Prado was paid $97,000 for his work. Rodriguez had previously announced his resignation, effective April 6, following the release of the report that found no wrongdoing by local officers who took over an hour to confront the gunman. Rodriguez did not mention the incident in his resignation letter and instead stated that it was time for a new chapter in his career. The report has brought increased scrutiny to the actions of local law enforcement during the tragic school shooting.
