“Unions and Healthcare Workers: A Prescription for Healthcare by Rose Roach” – WFHB, February 2024

Welcome to Prescription for Healthcare, a podcast collaboration between the WFHB Local News and Medicare for All Indiana. This month we interview Rose Roach, National Coordinator of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer, about the growing trend of healthcare professionals joining unions to push back against the corporatization of the healthcare industry.

As Roach explains, “Doctors and nurses are the conscience of health care. They are the voice for us as patients. Corporate health care doesn’t give two hoots about us, but not so when it comes to our doctors and our nurses.” She believes that the only way to radically change a healthcare system that is nothing more than a healthcare marketplace these days is to engage care providers in the collective struggle for a humane, patient-provider centered system.

This is why we see more and more physicians exploring unions as a way to ensure their ability to practice medicine as they’ve been trained to do. As Roach says, “Our doctors and nurses are coming together to fight against that ever growing focus of our health care system.”

In fact, just this month we heard about nurses at IU Health’s University and Methodist hospitals eyeing unionizing. It’s clear that healthcare workers are fed up with the current system and are looking for ways to protect themselves and their patients from corporate greed.

So if you want to learn more about this important issue, tune in to Prescription for Healthcare on the second Thursday of every month (except this month on March 3rd) at 5:15 PM as part of Local News at 5:15 PM on WFHB Local News.
