10 heart disease-causing dishes high in unhealthy fats

The consumption of fatty meats, poultry with skin, fast food, bacon, and processed meats can increase the risk of heart disease due to their high saturated fat content. Saturated fat is just one type of fat among four others: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, trans fats and saturated fats. While monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are considered good for heart health, consuming too much saturated or trans fat can be detrimental.

Saturated fat can increase the levels of bad LDL cholesterol in the body, a major risk factor for heart disease caused by plaque buildup in the arteries. Trans fats not only increase LDL cholesterol but also decrease HDL cholesterol levels, further increasing the risk of heart disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting trans-fat consumption to less than 1% of total calorie intake per day and saturated-fat intake to less than 10%. Here are ten foods that are high in bad fats that should be limited for better heart health:

1. Meat – Fatty meat is one of the least healthy sources of saturated fat. It’s best to choose lean cuts or opt for plant-based protein sources like beans or lentils.

2. Poultry with skin – Removing the skin from poultry can significantly reduce saturated fat intake. Opt for skinless chicken or turkey instead.

3. Ice cream – High in both saturated fat and calories, it’s best to indulge in moderation or opt for lower-fat alternatives like sorbets or frozen yogurt.

4. Margarine – High in both saturated and trans fats, it’s best to stick with butter or switch to an unsalted version of vegetable oil spreads like olive oil or avocado oil spreads which are healthier alternatives .
