Chair of COVID subcommittee requests testimony from leading science journal editors on their connection with the federal government

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, led by Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), has launched an investigation into the relationship between scientific journals and the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a series of letters sent to the editors-in-chief of The Lancet, Science, and Nature science journals, Wenstrup requested that they testify at an upcoming hearing scheduled for April 16.

The hearing will focus on “Academic Malpractice: Examining the Relationship Between Scientific Journals, the Government, and Peer Review.” Wenstrup expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest between these journals and the federal government in granting them access to sensitive information or data during the pandemic.

Wenstrup’s letters referenced Freedom of Information Act requests that showed these journals had been in contact with top White House health officials like Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins. However, he did not provide any specific reports or studies to support his claims.

A search for research articles related to COVID-19 on the websites of The Lancet, Science, and Nature yielded nearly 19,000 results. The Hill reached out to these journals for comment on their relationship with the federal government during the pandemic.

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic has been actively engaging with officials and experts involved in the COVID-19 response since its formation earlier this year. Fauci participated in two days of closed-door interviews with the subcommittee at the beginning of 2021. This ongoing investigation aims to shed light on how scientific journals interacted with government agencies and peer review processes during one of humanity’s most significant public health crises in history.
