U-M Health Expands in Southeast Michigan with State-of-the-Art Clinic

The University of Michigan Health has announced plans to purchase 7.28 acres of vacant land at the former Kmart Corp. headquarters in Troy, Michigan, with a focus on expanding clinical services and increasing patient access in Oakland County. Dr. Marschall Runge, CEO of Michigan Medicine, expressed excitement about the long-term presence and commitment to patients in the area.

The new center will feature advanced specialty and diagnostic services and mark the beginning of a broader U-M Health presence in southeast Michigan. The facility will also include a clinical program for multidisciplinary cancer care, adhering to university guidelines for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) to minimize environmental impacts.

The former Kmart Corp. headquarters opened in the early 1970s but has been vacant since 2006 following a merger with Sears Holdings Corp., and relocation of operations to suburban Chicago. Demolition of the building and parking structure began last year, funded by Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC, who previously owned the property.

Overall, the University of Michigan Health’s expansion at the former Kmart site represents a significant investment in creating a healthcare hub for the community. With its focus on providing world-class care closer to home, this move is set to have a positive impact on Oakland County residents’ access to healthcare services.
