In the world of college football, a significant development has taken place in the quarterback landscape of the 2025 class. Ty Hawkins, a Rivals250 quarterback and No. 159 overall prospect, has decided to flip his commitment from TCU to SMU.
Hawkins had been committed to TCU since June 2023 and was ranked as the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the cycle. However, during his visit to SMU, he felt that their plans for him resonated with him, leading him to make the decision to commit.
The Mustangs have added Hawkins as their headlining piece of their 2025 class, which includes five four-star prospects, four of whom are from Dallas. SMU targeted Hawkins as they were looking to fill the void left by Keelon Russell’s transfer to Alabama earlier in the summer.
After staying in touch with SMU’s coaching staff and reflecting on his official visit, Hawkins felt that SMU offered him the best opportunity to play early and excel in the ACC. He expressed his trust in coaches Deriq King and Rhett Lashlee, believing that he would fit well in their offensive system.
Hawkins revealed that he made his decision to commit to SMU within the past few days after two good visits with both TCU and SMU. Although he had nothing negative to say about TCU, he ultimately felt that SMU was the better choice for him moving forward. During his high school career at San Antonio (Texas) Johnson, Hawkins demonstrated his skills on the field by throwing for over 4,200 yards and 54 touchdowns while also rushing for nearly 1,900 yards and 24 touchdowns.
SMU’s addition of Hawkins is a significant boost for their quarterback depth chart as they continue their journey towards becoming a top contender in the ACC.
