Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ Sweeps Through Southern Mexico, Bringing Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds

Tropical Storm Chris hits Veracruz, Mexico’s coastal region

Tropical Storm ‘Chris’ made landfall in the town of Lechuguillas, located in the southern Mexican state of Veracruz, on Sunday night, according to reports from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico. The National Water Commission (With water) announced that the storm hit the municipality of Vega de Alatorre at 10:50 p.m. (04:50 GMT). Tropical Storm Chris presented maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 85 km/h, and was moving west at 20 km/h.

The Mexican Meteorological Service issued a warning for extraordinary rains in Hidalgo, Puebla, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, and Veracruz; as well as torrential rains in Oaxaca and Tamaulipas; and intense rainfall in Campeche, Chiapas, Nuevo León, and Tabasco. The SMN also forecast wind gusts of 70 to 90 km/h, possible formation of waterspouts, and waves between two and four meters high on the coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco.
