On April 11th, I made my way to Caltech’s Beckman auditorium for what I thought would be a typical genius lecture. However, the experience was anything but ordinary. The speaker was graduate student Hannah Dion-Kirschner, and her presentation was titled “How Soil Microbes Help Us Fight Climate Change.”
The audience consisted of students from fifth to sixth grade who were fully engaged throughout the lecture. Dion-Kirschner took the students on a journey through the microscopic world of soil microbes and drew parallels between her scientific research and playing the piano, emphasizing the importance of practice and the scientific method.
Throughout the presentation, Dion-Kirschner explained the vital role that microbes play in combating climate change. She even incorporated a piano performance into her talk, further engaging with both the students and their teachers. The learning process became even more dynamic as she interacted with them and answered their thoughtful questions at the end of the lecture.
The impact of this lecture was profound not only on the young students but also on myself. It was clear that Caltech is fostering a supportive and engaging environment for scientific learning. The experience was truly inspiring, and I am grateful for having been a part of it.
