Kelvin Kiptum’s family is devastated after the loss of the marathon world record holder in a car crash. The accident occurred near Kaptagat, Kenya, where Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed.
Kiptum’s father, Samson Cheruiyot, shared his heartbreak about losing his only child who had promised to build him a house and buy him a car. This loss is especially difficult considering that doctors had advised against further pregnancies after Kiptum’s birth because of complications experienced by his mother, forcing his parents to relocate their hopes and dreams onto him.
Kiptum’s wife, Asenath Cheruiyot stated they were supposed to travel to Rotterdam together where Kiptum had hoped to compete in finishing the marathon in less than two hours. According to Kiptum’s father, Kiptum had given up his studies in electrical engineering for running, which was his passion. His wife mentioned she does not know what she will tell their children about this tragic loss.
Kelvin Kiptum was one of the most promising road runners to come along in years, having set the world record at the Chicago Marathon. The record was ratified by World Athletics last week.
