In a tragic turn of events, Kenyan marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were involved in a fatal road accident Sunday night. According to Kenyan police, both Kiptum and Hakizimana died in the accident just outside the Rift Valley town of Eldoret. The 24-year-old athlete was driving a Toyota Premio at the time of the accident.
Kelvin Kiptum recently set a new marathon world record with a time of 2:00:35 in the Chicago Marathon in October. This time was recently ratified by World Athletics. He was considered a bright prospect in the sport, having switched to running marathons only a year prior to setting the record. Kiptum’s time surpassed a previous record set by fellow Kenyan, Eliud Kipchoge, who is renowned as one of the greatest marathoners of all time.
The 36-year-old coach, Gervais Hakizimana, was a former professional athlete from Rwanda who had participated in various race distances. This is a developing story.
