The Greenville Zoo has announced the difficult decision to euthanize one of their African Lions, Saied, at the age of 15. Despite receiving treatment for degenerative joint disease and a spinal neurological issue, recent testing revealed that his conditions had worsened significantly and were affecting his quality of life.

Saied and his brother Chuma joined the Greenville Zoo from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia back in 2010. Saied was known as the dominant male of the pair, and staff will now monitor Chuma as he adjusts to life without his brother. The zoo is currently planning a remembrance for Saied, and updates on their progress will be shared with visitors.

The Greenville Zoo is mourning the loss of Saied, a beloved member of their community. They appreciate the support and understanding from visitors and animal lovers during this difficult time. Stay tuned for more information as the zoo continues to honor Saied’s memory. Copyright 2024 WHNS. All rights reserved.
