The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for years, and the focus on defense often overshadows the economic war happening simultaneously. The US and EU impose sanctions on Russia regularly to hinder its ability to continue the war. However, there are analyses, data, and disinformation suggesting that these sanctions are ineffective. This week, the EU imposed its 14th round of sanctions on Russia, prompting Russia to claim that it was harming itself more than Russia.
To understand the success of these sanctions and their broader economic implications, Ilana Bet-El invited Agathe Demarais, Senior Policy Fellow for Geoeconomics at the ECFR. Agathe is an expert in sanctions and helped provide clarity on economic measures, countermeasures, and their impact on both Russia and Ukraine. They also discussed the global economic situation from demography to corporate interests and considered their future impact.
