Tesla has recently launched a major update to enhance the Phone Key feature for iPhone users. This update, part of version 2024.2.3 software, incorporates Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. With this development, vehicles and iPhones can now communicate with unprecedented accuracy, resulting in more responsive locking, unlocking, and automatic door operations.
To access the update, Tesla advises users to upgrade their Phone Key via the Tesla app. This involves switching from Bluetooth to UWB connectivity. The upgrade requires an iPhone 11 or later model with UWB, as well as the latest Tesla app version 4.29.5 or higher.
The deployment of this feature is currently selective, available only for the latest Model 3, 2023 Model X, and Cybertruck models equipped with UWB technology. Despite being included in the certificates of conformity for all refreshed Model S and Model X vehicles, these models do not yet have access to the upgraded Phone Key feature. Additionally, this update is exclusive to iPhone users as some Android devices equipped with UWB are not supported at present.
This update underscores Tesla’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to improve user experience specifically catered to the significant number of iPhone owners among them. Although it does not extend to integrating Apple’s Car Key feature in Apple Wallet at present, it still represents a considerable improvement in convenience and security for vehicle access for iPhone users.
Tesla’s adoption of UWB for Phone Key paves the way for further collaborations between automotive and smartphone technologies that could significantly enhance functionality and user experiences in the future.
