SNB reports Swiss economy probably grew slightly in the first quarter

The Swiss economy is showing signs of slight improvement in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Swiss National Bank (SNB). Economic indicators suggest that activity was more dynamic during this period, indicating a positive outlook for the country’s growth.

In the final three months of 2023, Switzerland’s economy grew by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter. While manufacturing remained stagnant during this time, it was the service sector that drove moderate economic growth in the first quarter. The SNB cited weak global demand and challenges related to the Swiss franc exchange rate as concerns for manufacturers.

Manufacturers are facing pressure on their margins due to a lack of pricing latitude. In response to this, the SNB recently cut its key interest rate for the first time in nine years and stated that the business outlook is improving. Service sector firms are expected to continue growing robustly, while manufacturing companies anticipate sales increases in the future.
