In a historic performance at a Diamond League meet in Xiamen, China, Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis broke the men’s world record for the eighth time. The impressive feat came as he cleared an astonishing 6.24 meters (20 feet, 5 inches), earning him bonus money with each new record.
The next challenge for Duplantis will be to break the 6.25-meter mark, which could potentially make him the first man to clear 20 feet, 6 inches. In other events at the meet, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico won the 100m hurdles in a blistering 12.45 seconds, outperforming Bahamian Devynne Charlton by just four hundredths of a second.
Notable competitors in the race included reigning world champion Danielle Williams from Jamaica and world record holder Tobi Amusan from Nigeria. Torrie Lewis claimed victory in the women’s high jump over Mutaz Barshim from Qatar by clearing an impressive height of 2.27 meters. Gong Lijiao of China emerged victorious in the women’s shot put with a throw of 19.72 meters, while American Shelby McEwen won the men’s high jump over co-Olympic gold medalist Mutaz Barshim from Qatar by clearing an equally impressive height of 2.35 meters.
The next Diamond League event will take place in Suzhou, China and will be broadcast live on Peacock from 7-9 a.m. ET.
