The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced that they have released quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. This decision was made after a mutual agreement between the two sides, as Trubisky was set to play the second year of a three-year contract that would have kept him in Pittsburgh through the 2025 season. At 29 years old, he will now hit the free-agent market.

This move leaves Kenny Pickett as the only quarterback under contract in Pittsburgh. While Mason Rudolph served as an injury replacement to Pickett last season, there’s no guarantee he will remain. Head coach Mike Tomlin has expressed interest in having a quarterback competition in the fall, and with Trubisky gone, Pittsburgh will be looking elsewhere to solidify its quarterback depth chart.

Trubisky, who was a first-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2017, has started 57 NFL games and made a Pro Bowl appearance in 2018. Despite this, at this point in his career, he’s projected to sign as a backup on the open market.

Pittsburgh has been considering pursuing Ryan Tannehill, who will become a free agent after leading the Tennessee Titans for four-plus seasons. Despite losing both games he started for the Steelers last season, Trubisky completed 62.6% of his pass attempts for 632 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions and could offer valuable experience and depth to another team.
