Shrewsbury Business Gears Up for Weather Impact This Week

As winter snow melts away, spring is making its presence known in Shrewsbury with chirping birds and longer days. However, meteorologists are predicting a storm that could bring up to 8 inches of snow to parts of Central Massachusetts on Wednesday.

At Papa’s Hardware, owner Fred Betti is preparing for the upcoming storm. The store has been receiving shipments of spring flowers, but with the expected snow, the blooms will have to stay inside. Instead, Betti is putting out winter gear like shovels and ice melt, which fortunately are in ample supply.

The National Weather Service forecasts a mix of snow and rain starting Wednesday morning, with Worcester likely seeing 1 to 2 inches of snow by evening. A winter storm watch has been issued for Northern Worcester County from Wednesday morning to Thursday evening, with total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, potentially up to 8 inches near the New Hampshire border.

Betti mentioned that he has a delivery of cold-tolerant crops coming in on Wednesday, but due to the harsh weather, they will need to be brought inside immediately. As frustrating as it is to deal with winter weather in the spring, Betti is prepared for whatever comes on Wednesday, hoping for nicer weather soon.
