Rising Dangers of Counterfeit Botox: 22 Reported Cases Lead to Hospitalization and Potential Botulism Outbreak

Botox injections have been found to be counterfeit, leading to illness for 22 individuals. Of those affected, half were hospitalized and the cases were reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This alert was sent out to doctors on Tuesday, as the CDC identified that the injections were being administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals, even in informal settings such as homes or spas. The majority of those affected received these injections for cosmetic purposes.

According to health officials, six people have been treated for suspected botulism due to the counterfeit injections. The botulinum toxin can lead to botulism when introduced into the bloodstream. This serious illness presents with symptoms such as double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and breathing complications. It is crucial that individuals only receive these injections from licensed professionals and promptly report any suspicion of exposure to counterfeit products.
