Fire departments across the country are now able to apply for a cutting-edge helmet-mounted device called C-THRU, which was developed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in partnership with an Austin-based startup Qwake Technologies. The device, which is designed to be hands-free and lightweight, is equipped with a high-speed thermal camera that captures the surroundings similar to those currently used by firefighters.
Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov, DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of providing improved equipment and technology to first responders in order to save lives and protect firefighters. With 400 prototype devices available for fire departments to apply for, C-THRU not only provides a clear, real-time view of the environment but also offers navigation assistance for backtracking and turn-by-turn guidance. In the event that a firefighter becomes lost in a burning building, a mayday function can be activated to alert other C-THRU wearers in the area to locate the distressed first responder.
The C-THRU system is continuously improving with over-the-air software updates, similar to a smartphone. This innovative technology will help first responders navigate dangerous situations more effectively, ultimately improving safety and saving lives.
