Lexi Bogan, a young woman from Rhode Island, faced a life-threatening situation at the age of 21 when she needed surgery to remove a vascular tumor located near the back of her brain. Despite a successful 10-hour surgery in August, Lexi struggled with speech impairment after the breathing tube was removed during her recovery. This loss of voice was a result of the procedure that saved her life.
Months later, healthcare professionals at Rhode Island’s Lifespan Hospital group introduced Lexi to an AI program called OpenAI. Through the use of Voice Engine technology, OpenAI was able to replicate Lexi’s voice by creating a voice-cloning technology. This technology allows Lexi to input phrases into an app and have them repeated in an audio clip using her own voice.
The innovative AI-generated voice recording technology has enabled Lexi to communicate more effectively. For example, she can use the custom-built app to place orders at drive-thrus and hear her voice speaking out the order. The realistic sound of her voice, including her laughter, has brought a sense of normalcy back to her life.
