Red Yeast Rice Supplements Linked to Five Deaths and Over 100 Hospitalizations in Japan; Kobayashi Pharmaceutical factory Raided

In Japan, health officials have taken action following reports of deaths and illnesses potentially linked to dietary supplements produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical. The company’s factory in Osaka was raided by authorities, who inspected the facility where supplements containing red yeast rice, or “beni koji,” were manufactured.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical reported five deaths and 114 hospitalizations connected to their products, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue a warning. The cause of the illnesses, including kidney failure, is currently unknown. An investigation is underway to determine the exact reasons behind the health issues.

The recall was initiated after official medical reports were received, indicating a delay in taking action. The supplements were available for purchase without a prescription and were sold in large quantities over the past few years. The government has ordered a review of the approval system for health products, with a report expected in May.

In response to the situation, the company has recalled the supplements containing red yeast rice. Despite reports of health problems surfacing in 2023, the ingredient has been used for years in various products. “Beni koji” contains Monascus purpureus, a red mold commonly used as a food coloring.

A Chinese consumers association has also raised concerns about the safety of Kobayashi products, urging consumers to stop using them. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict regulations and oversight in the healthcare industry to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
