Prosecutors seek jail time for Luis Rubiales over World Cup kiss incident

Prosecutor Marta Durantez has charged Luis Rubiales, the former head of Spain’s football federation, with sexual assault and coercion for kissing female footballer Jenni Hermoso without her consent. The incident occurred after Spain won the World Cup in 2018. According to the charges, Rubiales kissed Hermoso in front of a packed stadium, leading to an outburst from her teammates who claimed it was unwelcome and offensive.

Rubiales has denied any wrongdoing, but he was forced to resign from his position shortly after the incident. Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half year jail term for Rubiales and one year and one-and-a-half years for Jorge Vilda, Albert Luque, and Ruben Rivera who were accused of coercing Hermoso into claiming the kiss was consensual. If convicted, all four men could face up to 18 months in jail.

Durantez is also seeking €100,000 in damages for Hermoso, with Rubiales responsible for at least half of this amount. In addition to damages, Durantez has requested a restraining order against Rubiales, preventing him from coming within 200m of Hermoso and contacting her for the next seven-and-a-half years. The incident has overshadowed the historic achievement of Spain’s women’s team which had won its first ever World Cup at the time.

The scandal led to Rubiales’ suspension by Fifa and his subsequent resignation from both the Spanish football federation and Uefa in September. The incident prompted calls for changes in women’s football in Spain, with players boycotting national team events. Rubiales’ actions have brought attention to issues of sexism and misconduct in sports, emphasizing the importance of respecting boundaries and consent in all aspects of the game.

Rubiales was once hailed as a promising young coach who had made great strides with his career before being embroiled in this scandal that threatened his reputation and career prospects.

The trial is expected to take place soon and will be closely watched by sports fans around the world as they await justice for Hernando’s alleged assault by Rubiales.
