Percutaneous Endoscopic Nephrolithotomy: Saving a Life from Complex Kidney Stones

Mr. An, a 74-year-old man from Dong Nai, had been suffering from a persistent urinary tract infection for an extended period. Following a thorough examination, it was discovered that the root cause of his infection was a large coral stone in his left kidney measuring 10×5 cm with a complex structure similar to ginger root.

Six years ago, Mr. An had a small stone in his left kidney but did not seek treatment for it. Traditional open surgery was not feasible due to these factors; instead, percutaneous endoscopic nephrolithotomy (PCNL) was recommended as an effective treatment method that is less invasive than traditional open surgery while minimizing the risk of complications.

Dr. Truc divided the lithotripsy treatment into two sessions to ensure complete removal of the stones while minimizing the risk of complications through this procedure, the large coral stones were successfully broken down and removed from Mr. An’s kidney, preserving his kidney function and health. It is important to note that coral stones can easily recur so early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent further complications Dr. Truc emphasized on regular health check-ups and early intervention for urinary tract infections that do not resolve with standard treatment to prevent coral stones and other kidney issues.

To prevent coral stones and other kidney issues Dr. Truc recommends maintaining good hydration, avoiding certain foods that contribute to stone formation such as dairy products and red meat, seeking timely medical attention for any urinary symptoms or infections like burning during urination or cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
