Pennsylvania Promotes Small Businesses during Small Business Week: A Look at New Cumberland’s Downtown Tour and Funding Boost

As Small Business Week approaches in Pennsylvania, from April 28 to May 4, state officials have launched a campaign to promote shopping at main street businesses. The campaign kicked off with a tour of downtown New Cumberland led by Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger and Mayor Joan Erney. The tour included visits to local businesses such as the West Shore Theater, Hanna’s Ice Cream, Oxford Hall Celtic Gift Shop and Cafe, Semoff’s Barber Shop, and iDesign Plastics.

During the tour, Mayor Erney thanked the community for recognizing small businesses in New Cumberland and highlighted the diverse range of businesses in the area. Borough Council President Don Kibler acknowledged the support received from DCED in recent years and emphasized the community’s efforts to utilize funding and resources effectively to improve the quality of life in New Cumberland.

In addition to promoting small businesses in New Cumberland, Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration has announced an increase of $25 million to the Main Street Matters program in the proposed budget for 2024-25. This funding will help support commercial corridors across Pennsylvania. As part of this effort, state officials plan to visit other counties such as Northampton, Venango, Delaware, Luzerne, and Somerset during Small Business Week.

Secretary Rick Siger’s tour of downtown New Cumberland businesses aimed to highlight the importance of supporting local businesses and encouraging community engagement.
