Northern Illinois University (NIU) has been awarded a $158,531 Susan Harwood Federal Safety Health Training Grant to advance workplace safety and health training. This grant aims to provide mental health and suicide prevention training to employers and employees, with a focus on small businesses and hard-to-reach, at-risk construction and general industry workers.

NIU’s Continuing and Professional Education unit will lead the training courses, providing non-credit, professional development, and certification prep courses in partnership with OSHA. The National Safety Education Center at Northern Illinois University is an OSHA training institute education center, offering occupational safety and health training to workers, supervisors, and employers in both the public and private sectors.

The training topics covered in the sessions will include recognition, avoidance, and mental health stressor prevention. The training courses will be led by John Newquist, an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer and will range from two to four hours in length. These sessions will be available in face-to-face, virtual, and on-site delivery formats.
