Navigating the Legal Ethics Challenges of AI in Healthcare: A Spencer Fane Attorney’s Perspective on EMI 2021

Spencer Fane attorney Bill Hopkins recently presented at the 25th annual Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law Conference (EMI) in New Orleans, hosted by the American Bar Association Health Law Section. The firm was also a sponsor of the event. Bill’s session, AI and Legal Ethics: Considerations for Health Care Attorneys, focused on the emerging legal ethics issues faced by health care attorneys as the use of artificial intelligence grows. He and Jason Lacey from IMA Financial Group discussed the use of generative artificial intelligence in legal tasks, the preparation of legal documents, and the evolving rules and guidelines that may restrict such use. They also addressed specific ethics concepts such as technology competence, maintaining confidentiality, and discharging supervisory obligations.

During the EMI conference, attendees had the opportunity to network with other professionals in their field and explore New Orleans while covering topics such as DOJ enforcement, emerging therapies and alternative substances in healthcare, Physician Self-Referral Law, mental health crisis and private equity.
