Moran Iron Works (MIW) has been recognized for their expertise in custom design and engineering solutions with the award of a significant contract from SMS group. The project involves the fabrication of two granulation basins that will play a crucial role in decarbonizing the cement industry. Each basin weighs an impressive 164,000 pounds and stands 59 feet high and 21 feet in diameter.

This new green technology offers superior quality and lower carbon emissions compared to traditional Portland-style cement, providing high value and quality for reuse while reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. The process of transporting these basins began in January of 2024, utilizing MIW’s High-Wire Corridor to transport them to Rogers City Port. From there, they were loaded onto a barge for shipment to their final destination on the Great Lakes.

The completed Granulation Basin from 2023 is currently being loaded onto a barge at Port Calcite in Rogers City.
