Saving a life: how 45 minutes of patient resuscitation revived someone in cardiac arrest

A man in Ho Chi Minh City collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest while attempting to block a ball with his chest. Doctors at Gia Dinh People’s Hospital worked tirelessly to resuscitate him for 45 minutes, using 10 electric shocks before performing ECMO to save his life.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient was unresponsive and had no detectable pulse or measurable blood pressure. The medical team tried everything from heart massages to electric shocks, but nothing seemed to work. Despite their best efforts, the patient remained unresponsive for 45 minutes before showing signs of recovery. However, he experienced severe hypotension and pulmonary edema, which required additional treatment.

The doctors utilized hypothermia and ECMO to protect the patient’s brain and support his heart and lungs. With continuous dialysis over 48 hours, the patient regained consciousness, was able to come off ECMO after 72 hours, ventilation support after 4 days, and was discharged from the ICU after 6 days.

Genetic testing revealed that the patient had a mutation in the MYPN gene, which is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden death. The patient underwent cardiovascular rehabilitation before resuming normal activities and had a defibrillator implanted to prevent future sudden deaths. It is crucial for individuals engaging in sports to know their cardiovascular health and seek medical attention if there is a family history of sudden cardiac death or if symptoms arise during physical activity.

In conclusion, this case highlights the importance of swift and specialized medical interventions along with genetic testing in saving lives in cases of sudden cardiac arrests. Understanding one’s cardiovascular health can help prevent fatalities such as this one by seeking appropriate care when necessary.
